Cien Agaves – Scottsdale, AZ

So, this was a Mexican/taco place. I do like Mexican food as it usually has a lot of flavor. The problem with tacos is that you eat them with tortillas, which have more carbs than you think. If you’re only living low-carb vs keto, this probably isn’t an issue but if you’re trying to stay in ketosis, having a few tacos can kick you out of it. Also, we were in a hurry and when we sat down I ended up needing to take a work call and didn’t have a lot of time to look over the menu. So, looking quickly for non-taco options that aren’t carby/sugary, I spotted the ceviche. Shrimp is a great protein option as it’s high in protein, almost no carbs, and contains Omega-3s. Plus, ceviche is made with cilantro (which I love) and is very flavorful (also which I love). The “icing on the cake” was that theirs was topped with avocado slices, which are a wonderful source of healthy fat. It came served with chips and I asked about substituting something else for those. They had a side of veggies, which was zucchini, squash, onions, amd bell peppers (I was informed) so I requested those instead. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t replace them without an upcharge of $2.50, which I do understand as I’m sure they cost more than chips and a side of their veggies usually costs $3 so I guess I was getting a deal. Haha  The side of veggies ended up containing corn, too, which I didn’t eat (was probably GMO and corn has almost no nutritional value) and I didn’t eat all the onions either (they were in my ceviche and onions can tend to give you gas so I figured I wouldn’t consume that many). In the end, I wound up getting very flavorful food with a decent amount of nutrition and few carbs.
