This was kind of a tricky one! The easiest play would have been to order the Ceviche, but I had already just gotten that for lunch. Upon looking over the menu, there were hardly any options that wouldn’t require a lot of changing or wasted food. Plus, the other goal is to get nutrients from what we eat, not just consume the lowest amount of carbohydrates. I had it narrowed down to three things: a burger where I would just remove the bun and waste it, a buffalo chicken wrap where I would remove the tortilla and waste it, or a salad. The problem with the burger option is that although it probably would have been the lowest carb option (and tasted good), it wouldn’t have provided much in the way of nutrients, plus I am looking for flavor and the burger I was eyeballing had peanut butter and jelly – I wouldn’t have gotten the jelly and the peanut butter probably wouldn’t have been clean and contained added sugar and most likely soybean oil. The problem with the wrap is that after removing the tortilla, it would have basically been like eating a salad, except without many veggies that would make a salad more healthy. Lastly, the ideal option for the salad would have been the one that had avocado and goat cheese on it, but I had just gotten avocado at lunch with my ceviche and although very healthy, I don’t normally consume more than half an avocado a day as they do contain carbs and I want to stay in ketosis. Side note: most restaurants have their “sides” listed a la carte and you’ll usually have “vegetables” or “seasonal veggies” as an option. I always ask what these are and I’m hoping for cruciferous veggies. This place was no different and luckily their veggies were broccoli (cruciferous), green beans, squash, and bell peppers. So, back to what I ordered… I ended up getting just their “Romaine Salad”, which had romaine lettuce (obviously), parmesan cheese, bacon crumbles, and I added grilled chicken to it (for an additional charge). It was supposed to come with a dressing that I nixed in favor of just a side of buffalo sauce, which has less of a chance of containing inflammatory oils and/or added sugars along with providing some heat/flavor that I like. I also ordered the side of veggies (which were seasoned deliciously and honestly my favorite part of the meal). So, other than the fact that I had to order/pay additionally for the side of veggies (vs my entre including a side) and having to pay additionally for the chicken, I was able to find a good balance of low carbs/sugar, a decent amount of nutrition, enough food to satisfy me, and great flavor. Eating healthy isn’t usually cheap but it’s easier to justify the price when your figure, your health, and the peace of mind you get comes with the meal.
